Early February 2010, the New Zealand government initiated an inquiry into improving the clinical trial environment within New Zealand. The inquiry seeks to identify strengths and weaknesses within the present system (which many believe is overly bureaucratic and time-consuming), and invites submissions from public health institutions and private companies operating within the current framework.

The inquiry would include ways to ensure:

  • Coordinated, nationwide approaches to clinical trials and performance measures
  • Streamlined ethics approvals systems
  • National patient referral networks, and better ways to approve, establish and conduct clinical trials
  • Removal of unnecessary barriers
  • Benefit to New Zealand patients through clinical trials, as well as the New Zealand innovation system, health system, and economy

PSL has completed a submission to the inquiry with several recommendations, and it is anticipated the results of the inquiry will be available??? For more information refer to:http://www.parliament.nz/en-NZ/PB/SC/About/Media/1/f/5/00SCHE_MediaRelease20100216_1-Improving-New-Zealand-s-environment.htm
